Most of these pictures were taken during bouts of insomnia. To counter boredom and restlessness, I would go for long drives. When something interesting caught my eye, I'd pull over to investigate with my camera.

I am attracted to the way mundane places such as gas stations, car washes, and storefronts sometimes undergo dramatic visual transformations at night under artificial illumination. When a building or structure catches the light just right, the background (in my mind's eye) recedes into darkness.
